Though in some parts of South Africa gardeners are blessed with soils naturally rich in organic matter and mineral elements, most have to cope with less than perfect conditions. Vital elements may actually already be present in the soil, but are not a limitless resource and will therefore need replenishing on a regular basis. Organic and chemical fertilizers contain far more plant food than humus, compost, animal manure and bird manure and should be used in conjunction with the above.
